B-29 Superfortress which dropped the atom bomb in Hiroshima
On August 6,1945 a B-29 bomber plane dropped an atom bomb in Hiroshima ( Japan ).At 8.15am Brigadier Paul Tibbetz of US airforce dropped an atom bomb named ' Little Boy' from Enola Gay ( the nick name of Boeing B-29 Superfortress long range bomber ).Thus the two key technologies which caused the Hiroshima disasters are- the Atom bomb and B-29 bomber plane.Let us discuss them in detail.
First let us talk about the bomb ' Little Boy '.Little Boy was an atomic bomb based on nuclear fission reaction. It was a 9,700 pound uranium bomb and was detonated at a height of 1,900 ft above the city. The nuclear fission reaction starts when a neutron strikes the nucleus of a Uranium atom. This causes the nucleus to divide in to smaller fragments and also releasing large amount of energy and neutrons. This neutrons hits another Uranium nucleus and the reaction continues and this causes a chain reaction and there is a sudden bursts of energy.
The Little Boy was a gun -barrel type atom bomb. This consists of two pieces of Uranium, both less than the critical mass and are placed at either end of the cylinder. When the detonator ignites one piece was fired in to another and together they form the critical mass required to sustain chain reaction. The bomb was long and thin in shape, but over the course of the project , it grew shorter. Thus it was named ' Little Boy '.
The second technology which enabled Hiroshima blast was the B-29 bomber plane. The B-29 bomber, produced by the Boeing Aircraft Company during the world war, was the first long-range heavy bomber employed by the United States airforce. The Boeing B-29 was designed in 1940 as a replacement for the B-17 and B-24. The first one built made its maiden flight on Sept. 21, 1942. This plane had many special features. The main one was the pressurized chamber, which enabled it to work at high altitudes and also attain long range operational capabilities. The pressurized chamber forced it to operate the guns in a remote controlled way.Another speciality was the two bombing bays. These bays were used alternatively to maintain the balance of the aircraft. The aircraft was thus a technological marwel at that time.It was named 'Enola Gay' after the mother of the pilot who dropped atom bomb at Hiroshima.
Let us hope and pray that any of our technologies will not create another Hiroshima like disaster in future. But if such disasters happen now,it will be the end of our world." If there is a third world war, then the war after that would be fought with sticks and stones..".Let us remember this words told by one of our great men.
